Graduate Program in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology
We are very pleased of your interest in the Graduate Program in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a.k.a. UFRJ. UFRJ is the oldest and one of the largest and most respected universities in Brazil. It was founded in 1920, reorganized in 1937 as the University of Brazil, and it has been known as Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 1965. Today, the university holds campi in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, and Xerém cities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, offering high quality study programs in the different fields of Science, Technology, and Humanities. Four thousand faculty and ten thousand staff maintain the academic structure that allows more than 60 thousand students to be enrolled in 67 undergraduate and 93 graduate programs.
Ranking of graduate programs place our University among the best. According to a survey from the Ministry of Education released in 2010, 58 out of our 93 graduate programs are ranked “very good” (ranks 5, 6 and 7), 33 “excellent” (ranks 6 and 7) and 14 “top quality-international” (rank 7). These numbers place UFRJ among the top three universities in Brazil.
The Institute of Biology was founded in 1969 and is located at the University Park in Rio de Janeiro city at the Health Sciences Center (CCS), a building across the well-known University Hospital. The University Park is located about four km from the International Airport Antonio Carlos Jobim (Galeão) and 15 km from the downtown Airport Santos Dumont. The Institute has state-of-the-art technology for Biological and Biomedical Research and 100 faculty members.
